If you really can’t come, please tell us as soon as possible, so we can find somebody else for your spot.
The participation fee is only refundable for cancellations before Januray 10th. After that, unfortunately we can not refund your fees.
Account holder: Verein Model European Union Vienna
Name of the bank: Bank Austria
The Participation fee is €100,- including the hotel, or € 80,- without the hotel.
If you are in a difficult financial situation and can absolutely not afford to pay the full participation fee, please contact us right after your application (before the end of the application period) and we’ll try to find a solution. Money should not be the reason to exclude anyone. Plase note however, that everybody has to pay for their own transportation. Due to limited funds, we can not cover those costs for everybody.
Please transfer the participation fee right after you receive the confirmation mail. Besides budgetary reasons, we take it as a confirmation of your participation and interest in MEU Vienna. If we do not receive your participation fee, we will assign your place to someone else. Payment upon arrival is definitely too late.
We know that money transfers from outside of SEPA can cost a lot. Please contact us if that’s the case – we will try to come up with a solution for that.
For detailed information about visa requirements, please contact the Austrian embassy in your country. Basic information is available here.
Unfortunately we cannot provide you with a formal invitation as our legal and financial status does not allow that. If you need a confirmation that you were selected as a participant, please feel free to contact us.
The organising team is in charge of determining which role is assigned to whom. To make it fair for everybody, it is not possible to represent your own country. Also, the idea of this simulation is to play an assigned role and represent a stance on topics, which not necessarily is your own.
As a MEU is a gradually evolving and very intense work process of debate, amendments, voting etc., our participants should be available for the whole period of the MEU.
As we calculate on a very tight budget, we unfortunately cannot provide hotel rooms for people from Vienna. If you don’t need a room, the participation fee is € 80,- instead of €100,-.
Please inform us some time ahead of the conference, if possible already during the application period. We will do everything we can to make sure you’ll get everything you need.
Group applications are not possible, we welcome your seperate applications however. As we aim for diversity in our participants, which ultimately benefits all of you, we can not take into account applications by delegations.
During the days of the conference, there won’t be much time to do classic sightseeing. However, we will try hard to find time in the evenings to show you around in our city, and we definitely keep Sunday afternoon free to show you some touristic hotspots.
The deadline for the application ends on December 31st 2015 at 23:59:59. Soon after, we will select the participants of the MEU Vienna 2016, and inform you about our decision by mail. As a next step, those who get selected need to pay the participation fee within a certain time (detailed information in the confirmation mail). You will also receive information about the role you’ve been assigned to as well as the topics you are going to debate. We will also provide lots of information on organisational issues.
Based on your letters of motivation and your CVs, we will select the participants of the MEU. We will also take in consideration the gender balance of the participants, and we would love to have as many countries represented at the MEU Vienna as possible. In total, between 80 and 100 young people from all over the world will take part in this event.
The language at the conference is english. But as the percentage of native english speakers is usually quite small, don’t feel bad if your language skills are not perfect. Ours certainly aren’t 😉
Everybody between the age of 18-30 at the time of the conferece can attend. You don’t have to be from within the EU, you don’t have to be a student. You can participate whether you are new to MEU simulations or already have participated in one or more.
Happy to hear you’re interested! The MEU Vienna 2017 will take place from the 23th until the 26th of February 2017. To take part you have to apply on this website until December 17th. After the application period you will be contacted as soon as possible.
Your participation fee is what makes this event possible. The fee covers transportation in Vienna, the hotel, the event and food during the simulation. It does however NOT cover your travel expenses to and from Vienna. If you really really can’t afford it, please contact us and we’ll try to work something out.
MEU is a simulation of the European Union, much like a Model United Nation simulation. Attendees are assigned a country and a party and then participate in a simulated session of the European Parliament or the European Council of Ministers. There are two topics and the two chambers, Council and Parliament have to find common ground to reach a consensus. This is done via amendments to the proposed text which are brought forward by the people in the simulation.
Aside from the obvious like both formal and casual clothing (it can get quite cold, so keep that in mind when packing) you need to bring articles of personal hygiene and a towel, but not hairdryers as they are provided. Towels can also be rented at the cost of 1€. The hotel also offers an ironing station, if you need one. Coathangers are also avaliable at the hotel.
We ask all of our participants to always be respectful and polite to each other, even if the simulation and discussions might get emotional from time to time. Look out for and help each other.
To prepare, read the topics and papers we send out after confirmation carefully. Then, find out what the position of your assigned role (party, country) is, by checking online, contacting the party in question, etc. The better you prepare, the more fun the whole conference will be. Also don’t forget to read the Rules of Procedure. Don’t worry if they seem confusing at first, we will go through them again at the conference.
Please note, that you will be representing not your own opinion, but the opinion of the role you’re assigned, even or especially if those two do not match.
Data protection is very important to us. We don’t give your data away to any third parties, and we don’t use online documents to store them. As soon as we don’t need the personal data from your application that you give to us, it will be deleted. If you want your mail-address to be deleted as well, just let us know.
Also you might have noticed, that we use the „2 click verification“ for social networks, so our website can be used without trackers from facebook, etc.
During all debates formal attire is required. Aside from the working sessions, i.e. social activies and so on, you can wear your everyday clothes.
Vienna is very conveniently placed in the center of Europe. We recommend you to check with your train and bus companies. Especially buses are a very inexpensive possibility from a lot of destinations. If you come by plane, the airport Vienna International (VIE) is yours. From there you can take the commuter train („Schnellbahn“) or bus to the city center. Some airlines offer cheap flights to Bratislava, from there you have a bus connection to Vienna which takes about 1,5 hours. Parking in the city is quite expensive and both venue and hotel do not offer free parking.
The directions to the hotel will be sent to all of you individually. It can easily be reached by public transport.
Vienna, the capital of Austria ia a very safe city with a high standard of living. The public transport system is very well developed and you don’t need a car to go anywhere. There are no „dangerous“ no-go areas, but you should take standard caution and keep your valuables at your person and don’t bring them if you don’t need to.
The tap water in Vienna is excellent and perfectly good to drink. In fact it’s even healthier than some bottled waters.
Our hotel is a quick 15 minute ride with the tram away from the venue itself and also quite close to the very center of the city (you can walk or take the same tram). It provides breakfast, free wifi, a place to iron your clothes and hair dryers in all rooms. Also linnen are provided, so you don’t need to bring them, but please bring your own towel. (if you want to, you cant also rent a towel at €1)
Electricity is 220/240V, plugs look like this: Schuko plugs
